Personality:
Niou is first and foremost brashly mischievous; he is nicknamed the Trickster of the [tennis] Court for the tricks he plays on his opponents and his tennis-playing style (of the special anime brand) revolves notably around impersonating other players with incredible accuracy. He enjoys playing (often juvenile) pranks on his friends and schoolmates at any opportunity, such as when he sent first year student Kirihara Akaya on a wild goose chase to the student council room rather than the tennis club house and later impersonated the tennis team’s vice-captain to trick the same student into running an obscene number of laps. Niou gets along well with those who can look past or laugh at his pranks, and most of his teammates seem to view them in an amusing if resigned light, but he is confident enough in himself and his place in the world that he doesn’t let it bother him when someone disapproves of his playful, teasing nature.

Though Niou’s tricks are often lighthearted, he does possess an intense, more vicious side that comes out most notably during competition. As a member of the “Kings” Rikkaidai Fuzoku, a school known for its incredibly strong tennis team, Niou holds his own as a regular member and has little trouble agreeing with the team’s philosophy: always, absolutely win – losing is unforgivable. Within the terrifyingly strong Rikkaidai, Niou is known as “the scariest guy” and his captain has commented that “he’s a guy who could deceive the devil.” Niou’s official character profile states that he has a two-sided, aggressive personality and is of the type to “get them before they get you.” This is evident in the tennis he plays. He is always calm and composed and uses his tricks to demoralize his opponents, such as when he and his doubles partner nearly concussed Eiji Kikumaru during their match by setting Eiji up to receive a high-speed tennis ball to the face. However, Niou’s love for tricks and entertaining himself can be a detriment to his matches; his propensity for playing around and toying with his opponents irritates his vice-captain Sanada on more than one occasion and contributed to his loss to Fuji Syuusuke during the national tournament.

Niou has little love for authority and those who try to tell him what to do. During the regional tournament when Sanada commands the team to remove their wrist weights, Niou (technically his doubles partner impersonating him, but let’s say Niou for simplification) point-blank refused, stating instead that he would do as he wanted. He respects strength and skill, though not even this is always a protection from his pranks. Niou is a bit rebellious in nature, choosing to bleach his hair to platinum white in Japan’s fairly conformist-based society. However, Niou is willing to cooperate on the larger picture when necessary for the good of his team and has no trouble getting along with his gentlemanly doubles partner despite their markedly different temperaments. Niou possesses an unexpectedly serious aspect to his personality for some things, usually relating to doing well in school or sports. This is shown in how he makes sure to review his classwork before lessons and in how he is willing to play to the point of injury for the sake of winning a tennis match against older opponents.

Niou is ultimately a teenage boy, despite the serious business tennis of his series. He is the middle child of his middle-class family, with an older sister and a younger brother. His favorite class is math which suits his analytical nature that allows him to outsmart his tennis opponents and pull off his tricks. Niou likes jazz music despite music being his worst subject in school and he likes the beach but dislikes when the weather is too hot. His most visited place in school is the rooftop because he skips class or goes there to nap. Like all members of Rikkai’s tennis team, he is cocky and rightfully so with his exceptional skills. He doesn’t take life too seriously, though he dislikes when someone gets the better of him instead of the usual where he is the deceiver. Niou’s character profile states his ideal type is someone good at diplomacy, most likely because he appreciates a good partner in crime who can help him get out of trouble.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Analytical
His style of tennis involves reading his opponents' moves well in advance, so he has to be very observant and able to process a lot of information quickly and efficiently. The tricks he plays require a lot of attention to detail, so despite being seen as something of a slacker, he actually is quite clever.

+ Athletic
He survives Rikkai's killer tennis practices and plays as a regular at a national level, so he's in very good shape. He is also is skilled enough to copy other players' moves at a high level by combining his analytical abilities with his athleticism.

+ Determined
He's determined to the point of obstinacy for something he cares about. In a tennis match, he's gone as far as to play to the point of injury just to win despite intense pain. He has great strength of will and hates to give up.

+ Loyal
To those he considers his "team," Niou is very loyal. He's friendly and gets along well with those he doesn't consider an opponent or an enemy, and he's willing to go to fairly extreme lengths for his team's goals and be a cooperative, team player most of the time.

- Overconfident
He sometimes overestimates his own abilities (or, also in combination, underestimates his opponents). Since he's a bit arrogant, he can get caught up in one of his tricks or commit to a plan and not see that he needs to change it until late.

- Playful
He can lose sight of his goal in favor of toying with opponents or seeing a trick through. Even though he likes to win as much as anyone else on his team, he's not always as focused on the end goal; he may be too distracted by playing around if he thinks something's otherwise boring to take the path that will guarantee a win.

- Contrary
He dislikes authority and being told what to do, often to the point that he'll do the opposite of what he's told than for no other reason than because he feels like it, even if this is to his detriment. His rebellious nature can get him in trouble fairly easily, and even if he's punished, he's not easily cowed, so often situations only get worse.

- Ruthless
He has a marked lack of care for people he doesn't consider on his side. He's willing to seriously injure his opponents in matches and considers giving someone a concussion a valid way to achieve a win. Though he's not completely heartless, he does show significant willingness to be ruthless to achieve his goals.

Pokémon Information
Affiliation: Rocket
Starter:
1) Zorua - Niou's special shounen manga abilities involve using illusions to trick his opponents, so I think it'd be fitting to have his starter be a pokemon with similar abilities to help him play pranks in Route.
2) Murkrow (Rocket starter)

First Person Sample:
[Some guy is peering down at the transmission's source, looking pretty unimpressed. He taps a few times on the screen and grimaces.]

Yo, is anyone out there? So what's with this place? Either I'm have a really weird dream or I actually got sucked into a video game with eight-bit music and all. I know no one else's smart enough to pull a prank like this, so it can't be some big, elaborate set up.

Man, Sanada’s gonna be so pissed when I don’t show up at the bus. They better not leave without me. There’s no way I’m running home AND running… Shit, it’s gonna be five hundred laps. Unless Yukimura murders us all for losing and gets Sanada to hide the bodies, the suck up.

[Something makes its way over most of the pokegear's screen, blocking the view with a mass of thick, black fur, and Niou grumbles as he brushes the pokemon aside, giving it a clearly dubious look.]

And what’s with this... fuzzy thing, anyway? It keeps following me around like I'm its mom or something. Hey, hey! Mutt, if you pee on my shoes, I'm gonna make you into a fur hat! Man, what a joke. It's like some cuddle-me-pet sim. Ha, maybe I already passed out from running laps and this is just some kinda heatstroke hallucination.

Third Person Sample:
Niou wasn't exactly happy about waking up and finding himself in some weird ass underground base in who knows where without any idea of how he'd gotten there. It was creepy as hell that someone'd snatched him up and left him to wake up in some jail cell room, not to mention how they'd left him clothes in his size. How'd they even GET what his size was? And the background music and the— pokemon. It was honest to god a pokemon, he'd literally gotten stuck in a video game.

He was even less happy about suddenly having a schedule and responsibilities and a job. Especially not when that job was to go around and do someone else's grunt work because they couldn't be bothered to get off their asses and do it. It wasn't even like he'd signed up for this the way he had for tennis club. At least with tennis, running suicides until he thought he was gonna die and listening to Yukimura and Sanada's hardass bitching meant he could play in games. This place, it was all go mop the floors, go run some sketchy as hell game center, go find a toothbrush and scrub your boots and don't even THINK about having fun, and for what?

Nothing, as far as he could tell. Just get more orders and more boring things to do and actually be expected to do it if you let them start thinking you were an obedient little errand boy. Yeah, well, he wasn't gonna sit around and play by their stupid rules. That was for goody-two-shoes losers.

The fuzzy fox thing (pokemon, he had to get used to it being a pokemon, to actually being stuck in Pokemon Land) had to be good for something, right? Niou sat up from where he was slouched grumpily brooding on the bed and gave it a speculative once-over. It was small and quick, and pretty friendly. Yeah, he could work with this. Team Rocket thought they were the biggest baddies around? Time to see just what trouble he could get up to with or without their help.
